The present work presents new possibilities to efficiently calculate geometric and/or material nonlinearities in the dynamics of flexible multibody systems (MBS). The principal benefit of this method consists in the fact, that arbitrarily large rigid body rotations und nonlinear material behaviors of the components are directly integrated into the system of equations of the multibody system. No co-simulation as well as model reduction techniques are used. Therefore, this so-called MBS-FEM method represents a new, efficient approach in the field of the nonlinear multibody dynamics and the development of MBS simulation software. For the Modelling of flexible and rigid bodies, the so-called MBS-FEM system of equations of motion is formulated for the whole mbs. The flexible structures are discretized in smaller finite elements, which are efficiently formulated using the co-rotational finite element method (FEM). The large rigid body rotation and the deformable part of each finite element are separated from the total element deformation in a simple way. On this basis, complex nonlinear material models can be directly integrated in the co-rotational FEM formulations without any modifications. To solve the MBS-FEM system of equations, implicit time integration methods can be used effectively. In this work, an implicit time integration scheme of higher order in connection with the modified Newton-Raphson method is employed. Furthermore, important technical examples are introduced in this work. It can be shown, that geometric and/or material nonlinearities in flexible multibody systems can be computed by the use of the developed co-rotational MBSFEM method with high efficiency and precision. For this reason, this present MBS-FEM method provides a big application field for the calculation as well as optimization of technical systems.
