Spektroskopie an silizium- und kohlenstoffhaltigen Clustern: Dotierung und Hybride

Savoca, Marco

Silicon oxides and silicon carbides are not only in the focus of the semiconductor industry and relevant for the development of new materials from clusters and nanoparticles, they are also of interest in the chemistry of the interstellar medium. In this context, the availability of experimental data regarding structure of doped silicon clusters is an essential basis for exploring and controlling their electronic and optical properties. This dissertation, which has been realized within the framework of the research unit FOR 1282 „Controlling the Electronic Structure of Semiconductor Nanoparticles by Doping and Hybrid Formation“ and the project „Geometric and Electronic Structure of Silicon-containing Aggregates“ therefore explores the electronic and geometrical properties of cationic and neutral silicon clusters doped with carbon and oxygen as well as the properties of hybrids containing a silver cation and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) by means of messenger enhanced infrared photodissociation, infrared multiple-photon dissociation and IR/UV two-color resonance-enhanced ionization spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. The doped silicon clusters have been generated in a laser evaporation source, while the Ag+-PAH hybrids were generated in an electrospray ionization source and both have been explored by means of time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A detailed analysis of the geometry, the energetic and electronic properties as well as the vibrational characteristics of the clusters and hybrids was then based on the IR spectra in combination with quantum chemical calculations. In course of this analysis, the impact of the sequential increase of the doping, a variation of the doping atom as well as the impact of the hybrid formation on the geometrical and electronic properties have been explored. The results reveal that doping silicon clusters with even only one carbon atom affects their structure drastically, whereas the geometric topology is normally retained. The oxygen-doped silicon clusters do not show any sequential growth mechanism of the clusters when the number of oxygen atoms increases. A comparison with the neutral clusters additionally shows a significant impact of the ionization on the geometry of the explored cationic clusters. Regarding the Ag+-PAH hybrids, it has also been proven that the cation-π interaction, which is common for such metal-PAH hybrids, is of crucial importance for the determination of the geometric and electronic properties of the hybrids. The changes in the geometry, which are directly reflected in the IR spectra, are mainly a result of the shift of electron density from the PAH to Ag+ taking place during the hybrid formation.
