3D‐Seismikinterpretation, Struktur‐ und Attributanalyse sowie Visualisierung submariner Canyons, Mud Volcanoes und Pockmarks am Kontinentalhang des Nigerdelta‐Beckens
Sehnert, Christian
In this work geologic structures of a part of the central submarine Niger delta were
examined with the help of 3D seismic interpretation, seismic structural analysis as well as
attribute analysis. In the 3.282 square kilometre study area a submarine canyon, two palaeocanyons,
43 mud volcanoes, 17 palaeo-mud volcanoes and five big pockmark fields were
identified. Besides, the formation processes of the mud volcanoes and pockmarks in the
context of the fault system were examined and described. The sedimentary depobelts
respectively structural framework zones on the continental slope of the Niger delta were
verified in the study area and made consistent with the regional geology. The studied
structures and processes correspond to the regional geologic conditions of a characteristic
regressive delta at a passive continental margin.
The subrecent to recent canyon is active, differs in morphology and geometry from the
adjacent, larger Niger canyon and are by definition part of the type II-canyon systems. It
originates on the continental slope, represents a reactivation of the palaeo-canyon and is fed
by gravitative mass transport with sediments from River Niger. The palaeo-canyons show a
different development, from which one represents a direct predecessor at the same place and
the other one some older, alternative canyon course when the direction of sediment supply
was more to the northwest. The palaeo-canyons arose from fluvial channels, because they
originate as channels of the River Niger on the former Pleistocene continental shelf and are
type I-canyons like the recent Niger canyon. Their ages could be dated to the Late to Middle
Pleistocene. The generally regressive trend and the high sedimentation rates at a passive
continental margin like the Niger delta are the control processes for the formation and
preservation of the submarine canyons.
The formation of the mud volcanoes is linked to the existence of the mud diapirs and
is mostly related to the appearance and the development of growth faults and similar listric
normal faults. The diapirism which is responsible for the deformations of the sediments in the
study area is linked to plastic shale sediments and the sediment load by high sedimentation
rates which are the origins of the overpressure regime in the region.
The majority of the mud volcanoes forms along faults, the remaining arise directly
from the mud diapirs which are migrating to the sediment surface. The mud volcanoes spread
almost exclusively in one of three structural framework zones identified in the study area
which are defined by synsedimentary growth faults, thrust faults and the kinematics of the
appearing faults. These synsedimentary faults are responsible for the main fault direction
oriented from northwest to southeast.
For the origin of the pockmarks two formation processes were identified. The first
process is linked to listric normal faults in which the pockmarks line up in chains and the
other to the mud volcanoes and shale diapirs from whose side vents the pockmarks arise. It is
remarkable that the spatial frequency of the pockmarks correlates with that of the mud
volcanoes. Overall the fluid flow in the study area is hydraulically very active; nevertheless,
the northwestern part shows the most recent and maximum activity.
