Today's axial compressors achieve very high pressure ratios which requiresa high number of compressor stages. For an aircraft engine, the saving of a whole stage would at once reduce its weight and its size. With respect to the increasing share of renewable energy, part-load operation becomes more and more important for stationary gas turbines. Both demands result in an increased aerodynamical loading of the airfoils linked with a higher risk of boundary layer separation. The present work analyses active flow control by means of fluidic actuators in an aerodynamically highly loaded compressor cascade on the basis of computational fluid dynamics. Two flow control concepts are investigated using actuators on the cascade's side walls and the vane's suction surface. Effective and efficient parameters are identified on basis of a systematic analysis. The actuator should be located upstream of the separation and the jet directed with a flat angle from the surface. The impact of the flow control essentially scales with the amplitude of the jet. Shaping the actuator's opening as small slots enables high amplitudes in combination with a small mass flow. Unsteady flow control on the basis of pulsed jets or synthetik jets at a suitable frequency allows for a significant reduction of the energy input compared to steady blowing. The analysis highlights the need to account for the enery input in order to correctly assess the flow control. Besides a corrected total pressure loss coefficient, an efficiency of the cascade is defined which accounts for the energy input of the active flow control. The flow through the cascade and the effects of the active flow control are analysed on the basis of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations. The results show a reduction of the passage vortices and the total pressure losses using active flow control on the side walls. Using the actuators on the suction surface reduces the flow separation and therefore increases the pressure rise. The combination of the two flow control concepts leads to an accumulation of these effects and an increase in the cascade's efficiency by 8%. The numerical approach is able to assess the impact of the parameters of the active flow control concepts which can be proven thanks to the works of the experimental partners. Thus, the results of the present work form the requirement of an industrial implementation of active flow control in a technical application.
