Klapproth, Miriam

Methane, which is the main component of biogas and natural gas, is traded as one of the future alternative raw materials to petroleum. To date, methane is mainly used as fuel for energy generation. A further indirect application is the synthesis of high-quality hydrocarbons via the complex synthesis of syngas, which can be synthesized of methane. In comparison to indirect transformations, direct reactions, e.g. oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) to ethylene, are significantly more promising because of savings in production steps and energy costs. Nevertheless up to date, OCM has no industrial application. One of the biggest obstacles is the commercial applicability of the required catalysts. For the development of suitable catalysts, the challenge is to find highly active, selective and stable materials. In recent years, many catalysts have been tested for the OCM, whereby SiO2 supported MnxOy/Na2WO4 proved to be among the most promising candidate for commercialization. Despite intensive research on this catalyst, the characterization and localization of the active species are difficult due to the complex trimetallic system and the phase changes occurring during catalysis. In this thesis various porous metal oxides and supported metal oxide catalysts were prepared and tested in catalysis. Aside from optimizing the promising MnxOy/Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst, the influence of the catalyst structure and individual metal components on the catalytic activities was investigated. The variation of the nanostructured SiO2 support (KIT-6, SBA-15, silica monoliths) as well as the modification of the metal oxide composition had a direct influence on the crystalline phases, morphology and surface of the catalyst. This also resulted in a change of the reactivity in the OCM. In order to exclude the influence of the SiO2 support material, pure metal oxide catalysts were synthesized in which ordered mesoporous WO3 or Mn2O3 were used as carrier. By different loadings of the metal oxide carriers it was shown that Na or rather Na2WO4 have a direct influence on the selectivities in the OCM and are indispensable for high catalytic activity. As a further catalyst for the OCM, La2O3 nanowires were synthesized. The influence of the morphology, surface area and stability of differently shaped La2O3 nanowires on their catalytic activity were investigated and compared with commercial La2O3 powder and the SiO2-supported MnxOy/Na2WO4 catalyst. The investigations showed that the nanowire structure is important for obtaining long-term stable and active catalysts. The shape itself had no influence on the selectivity to C2 products at relevant reaction temperatures. The nanowire structure thus only functioned as a "structural precursor" in order to maintain a high surface area even under reaction conditions. In addition to the OCM, the synthesis gas-to-ethanol (StE) reaction has also gained in interest in recent years through the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel. Various materials were investigated for the process, whereby Rh-based catalysts with manganese as promoter showed the greatest potential. In this thesis the first pure Rh/Mn catalyst was synthesized and the catalysis results compared with a SiO2-supported Rh/Mn catalyst. The SiO2-free catalyst was found to be very promising in first catalytic tests with marked improvements in the selectivity to the product ethanol.
