Valdivia Steel, Lorena Cristina

The term »orthogonal projection« refers to the representation format which marks the source of the present study of the principles of the architectural representation in Andrea Palladio’s printed works »I quattro libri dell’ architettura« published in 1570. Palladio’s special position in architectural history is not only due to his many built works but at least equally to his numerous orthogonal drawings in this architectural treaty. The object of the present study is the role and the specific benefit of the orthogonal drawing in the Quattro Libri, which is one of Palladio’s greatest artistic achievements. By analyzing exemplary case studies and particular illustrative problems, this research will verify if Palladio’s illustrations themselves give away if they follow certain formal principles and build a systematic architectural representation. Contrary to common assumptions in architectural research, the result of this analysis, is the establishment that Palladio in no way categorically follows hard and fast conventions of representation determined at the outset and therefore seems to have been led not only by the rules of architectural representation logic but also in terms of their visual effect. Palladio’s phenomenal legacy reaches in its effect far into the modern era and shows impressively that Palladio, as architect as well as author, illustrator and publisher, was a master of architectural communication. This leads to the following question. How is it possible that the graphic quality, on which Palladio’s huge reception is based on, was sought and achieved by the use of the most abstract of all architectural representations: the orthogonal projection.
