The State Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres, a pillar of French handicraft, underwent both successful and difficult times since its establishment in 1740. But the most serious intervention in the manufactory’s history was the national socialist occupation of France, and hence of the company. Between 1940 and 1944, Sèvres was not only compelled to produce for the German occupiers – Hermann Göring in particular – but also served as a centre of propagandistic object art for Marshal Pétain. This doctoral thesis investigates those productions and the conditions under which they were made, as they constitute such a break in both the stylistic and economic history of the manufactory. Furthermore, the question is asked as to whether parts of the factory collaborated, particularly with regard to the fact that the business was obligated to the respective sovereigns at all times. This, in turn, gives rise to the question as to what extent a state can influence artistic developments if all decisions – from human resources development to the choice of artists and the client/price specifications – are made by the government. The latter aspects also played a role during the post-war period, which, together with the war damage to the factory, effectively kept the manufactory from re-joining the artistic avant-garde in the fifties. The second part of this research work therefore explores to what extent a modern state – in contrast to monarch patronage – still takes interest in maintaining a manufacturer of luxury goods. Sèvres was chosen as an example in order to analyse what kinds of structures were established on the French art market during the German occupation as well as how a formerly occupied company tried to reconnect with artistic traditions in the post-war period. A catalogue with excerpts from the inventory of the manufactory and selected drawings from the research period completes this dissertation.
