Abstract: A key challenge in manufacturing industry within the next years is to reduce and optimize energy consumption of production systems without affecting productivity. To adress this problem, different approaches are discussed, such as smart grids, or utilization of more energy-efficient machine components. A new approach on shop floor level is to optimize production control strategies, to power down inactive machine components during non productive phases. To fully exploit this potential, it is necessary to integrate the planning of the required control systems into all phases of the engineering process. This paper presents a concept for the integrated engineering of these new applications by evaluating planning tools, methods and data models regarding their suitability to implement the concept of advanced power down and restart concepts. In conclusion, requirements on these tools, methods and data models are defined, to empower them for optimal support of the future engineering process.
