Gating and gatedness: interpreting the procedural refiguration of an enclosed residential compound in Guangzhou

This paper proposes a relational spatial lens and methods to investigate the drivers underlying the production and reconfiguration of the gating space and the meaning of gatedness in an enclosed residential compound in the Chinese urban context, which is commonly referred to as a Gated Community. The conceptual lens helps reveal the fluid character of the materialized gating spaces and their polyvalent meaning. This is accomplished by systematically employing a relational conceptualization of space, as well as the concepts of refiguration and translocalization. Empirically, we focus on a perennial and dynamic case in Guangzhou city, an enclosed residential compound called ‘East Lake New Village.’ We examine the distinct phases through which its physical ‘gating spaces’ and perceived ‘gatedness’ have grown and transformed over time. We address the causal relations between translocal spatial knowledges, contextualized practices, various material figurations of gating spaces and the multivalent meaning of ‘gatedness.’ We argue that the formation of gating spaces needs to be examined relationally, addressing the ways in which local and translocal objects are welded together in a place, which in turn either blurs or sharpens the rooted perception of gatedness in a local context.
In diesem Beitrag werden eine relationale räumliche Linse und Methoden vorgeschlagen, um die Triebkräfte zu untersuchen, die der Produktion und Refiguration des Gating-Raums und der Bedeutung von Gatedness in einer geschlossenen Wohnanlage im chinesischen urbanen Kontext zugrunde liegen, die gemeinhin als Gated Community bezeichnet wird. Die konzeptionelle Linse hilft dabei, den fluiden Charakter der materialisierten Gating Räume und ihre polyvalente Bedeutung zu fassen. Dies geschieht durch den systematischen Einsatz einer relationalen Konzeptualisierung von Raum sowie der Konzepte der Refiguration und Translokalisierung. Empirisch konzentrieren wir uns auf einen mehrjährigen und dynamischen Fall in der Stadt Guangzhou, eine geschlossene Wohnanlage mit dem Namen „East Lake New Village“. Wir untersuchen die verschiedenen Phasen, in denen die physischen „Gating Räume“ und die wahrgenommene „Gatedness“ im Laufe der Zeit gewachsen sind und sich verändert haben. Wir befassen uns mit den kausalen Beziehungen zwischen translokalem Raumwissen, kontextualisierten Praktiken, verschiedenen materiellen Figurationen von Gating Räumen und der multivalenten Bedeutung von „Gatedness“. Wir argumentieren, dass die Entstehung von Gating Räumen relational analysiert werden muss, indem die Art und Weise untersucht wird, wie lokale und translokale Objekte an einem Ort zusammengeschweißt werden, was wiederum die verwurzelte Wahrnehmung von Gatedness in einem lokalen Kontext entweder verwischt oder verschärft.
