The debate on sustainability to realise economic, environmental and socially oriented objectives within information technology (IT), IT organisations and the related businesses has gained in importance in recent years. This is attributable to various influencing factors and drivers, which are increasingly calling for compliance with regulatory requirements and environmental or social best practice standards as well as conformance with sustainable stakeholder demands. At the same time, the requirements of IT and the accompanying challenges have increased due to reduced IT life cycles, more demanding customers and the continuously growing pressure to innovate. Moreover, IT enterprises seek an active value added within the framework of business-IT-alignment to implement company-wide sustainability strategies which are to be guided and fostered by IT governance. Enterprises and IT organisations use standardised and common reference models, among others, to implement IT governance and to design information systems management which consequently assume a decisive role when considering sustainability objectives. Even though some preliminary reference models exist and certain methods and measures to design sustainable information systems management are available, a deficit in terms of implementing the respective sustainability objectives in the common and widely used IT governance and IT management models continues to prevail. Within this context, the present study develops design approaches and recommendations in 6 chapters to model a sustainable COBIT 5 process reference model. The COBIT model is one of the most renowned and most widely used IT governance and IT management reference models. Following a discussion of the current starting point, the rationale behind the need for action and the study’s methodological approach in Chapter 1, the theoretical framework within which this study is set is explored in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, the scope of sustainability in the COBIT 5 process reference model is analysed and assessed. To do so, suitable assessment criteria are defined, which represent the specific requirements for designing sustainable information systems management and for implementing sustainable IT governance. The results emphasise that the COBIT 5 model’s components are primarily of a generic nature. A closer look indicates that the focus of the current COBIT 5 process reference model lies mainly on economic and to some extent social objectives, but not on environmental aspects. Building on the results of Chapter 3, Chapter 4 evaluates the relevance of sustainability in information systems management, the significance of IT governance for sustainable information systems management as well as the scope of sustainability in the COBIT process reference model based on a survey. The findings are used to gain detailed insights on potential starting points to further improve the scope of sustainability in the reference model. Furthermore, findings on the practical implementation and introduction of sustainable objectives, organisational structures and processes in the areas of IT governance and information systems management are derived from four case studies to develop a sustainable COBIT 5 process reference model. Chapter 5 presents a sustainable COBIT 5 process reference model that is modified based on the findings derived from the study, and which can serve as an application-oriented reference model for the implementation of sustainable IT governance as well as for the design and guidance of sustainable information systems management for enterprises or IT organisations. Finally, the study’s conclusions are summarised in Chapter 6 and recommendations are made for further research in related areas.en
