The thesis contributes to the design methods for microwave oscillators. A power oscillator for plasma generation is developed, which delivers up to 10 W output power in the 2.45 GHz ISM band. The purpose of the oscillator is plasma generation and thus it must provide a signal that is suitable to drive such a plasma. Therefore, the first part of the work is devoted to the properties of the plasma as time-varying microwave load. The plasma is driven by a modified transmission-line resonator. The resonator determines the operation frequency of the oscillator and, due to its transformation properties, ignites the plasma. This first part of the thesis is complemented by a description of the work impedance of the plasma and its influence on the microwave oscillator. A special VNA-based measurement set-up is proposed to characterize the resonator behaviour when loaded by the plasma. Microwave plasma parameters like electrode voltage and impedances are determined from the measurement data following a de-embedding process. This knowledge on the non-linear plasma properties is then used to create a nonlinear time-domain description of the plasma, which is a key tool in the design of plasma sources. The validity of the model is restricted to air as processing gas and the electrode geometry under consideration, but it can be employed for both time-domain and harmonic-balance simulation and thus forms the basis for all further oscillator developments within this work. The oscillator design process as presented here follows a new approach. The Auxiliary Generator method is introduced, a very useful and versatile tool, which is not limited to simulation, but also provides valuable data in practice when operating and tuning prototypes. As an additional novel feature a data post-processing method is presented that allows to cast complicated time-domain results into a comprehensible phasor representation. This post-processing provides better understanding of the circuit and allows to extract real and imaginary power fluxes as well as the impedance behaviour of the circuit. Nevertheless, the quasi-static time-dependence of the quantities is retained, so effects such as the plasma ignition can be simulated. These techniques significantly expand the portfolio of the common methods for oscillator design. Based on these methods, a prototype of a microwave plasma source is developed, assembled and put into operation. The plasma source yields excellent results under atmospheric conditions as well as with nitrogen or compressed air. With just 3 cm length and width the source offers a small form-factor, requires only a 24 V DC supply and delivers output powers in the 10 W range, enough to ignite the plasma as well as to maintain it burning. As a last step, the generated plasma is described from the physical point of view, studying properties such as temperature of electrons and gas as well as ion density. The work closes with experimental results on the activation of synthetic surfaces, so that a comparison of the new source to commonly known ones in terms of plasma properties becomes possible.en
