Since begin of the industrial era Anthropogenic activities have dramatically increased the emission of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and NPAH (Nitro-PAHs). PAH and NPAH have a high toxic potential with mutagenic and carcinogenic qualities. Especially in diesel exhaust extracts 3-Nitrobenzanthrone has a high mutagenicity. The objectives of this study are to determine concentrations, size distributions and deposition fluxes of PAHs, NPAHs and 3-nitrobenzanthrone in ambient air samples and to determine concentration and size distributions of these compounds in diesel exhausts. Furthermore, the deposition flux and the velocity of deposition for PAHs, NPAHs and 3-Nitrobenzanthron are calculated and evaluated with the modified deposition model. The deposition velocities of PAHs and NPAHs were calculated for the three used deposition sampler using a liner regression with deposition fluxes and atmospheric particle concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs. For the diesel engine an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology is basically used to reduce diesel exhausts, especially NOx. Except 3NBA the concentrations for PAHs and NPAHs with EGR technology are distinctly higher than without EGR. For the diesel emissions the particle size distribution is conspicuously different from that of the ambient air samples. For diesel exhausts the characteristic mass ratios of diesel emissions were determined for the first time. In general, the characteristic mass ratios of the emission sources has to be discreetly used to source apportionment, because the reference values of the literature were imperfectly considered and in particular this reference values were mostly not measured from emission sources. The results of the source apportionment by factor analysis showed that the transport sector, especially diesel exhausts, revealed to be the most important emission source of PAHs and NPAHs measured with low volume sampler and deposition sampler.en
