Photocatalytically modified materials especially in the construction engineering field turn more and more to scientist’s attention. Diverse studies have approved TiO2 photocatalysis to be very effective in the degradation of various kinds of pollutants. Constructional applications (like roof tiles, paving stones, cement etc.) are already available on the market which are making use of the air-purifying and self-cleaning characteristics of TiO2. However TiO2 modified materials are comparatively high in price. Another problem relates to the size of the TiO2 particles used in such materials, which is commonly in the nanoscale. Nanoparticles tend to agglomeration which can reduce the specific surface and hence the photocatalytic active surface in the case of TiO2. Therefore it is of keen interest to find an economical solution by efficient material usage. One way is the implementation of photocatalytically modified composite materials with tuneable particle sizes based on the core-shell principle. They only consist of a thin coating of the photocatalyst on a cheaper substrate. This work reports about the preparation of such photocatalytically modified composites. Based on low-priced raw materials SiO2-substrates were coated with TiO2. A systematic study starting with a relatively expensive organic TiO2-precursor and monodisperse SiO2-particles and switching over to the low cost industrial materials was performed. Tetrapropylorthotitanate and Titanylsulfate of industrial purity grade were used as the titania-precursors and common construction aggregates (silica fume, ground quartz and sand) for mortar and concrete were used as substrates. The hydrolysis time, acidity and calcination temperature for instance were varied to study the influence on the characteristics of the coated particles. The composites were characterized via SEM, XRF, XRD and BET amongst others. The results showed that a successful synthesis of TiO2-modified composites was possible. Moreover a specific composition of SiO2 and TiO2 was adjustable in most cases. All samples showed photocatalytic activity verified via the degradation of NO-gas or methyleneblue under UV-A light. In comparison with the reference material P25, some of the composites showed higher photonic efficiencies. This confirms the potential of such composite materials as an alternative photocatalyst.en
