Magnesium wrought alloys are attractive as lightweight structural materials for applications in the automobile, aircraft and space industries. But the applications are limited, due to the hexagonal crystal structure of magnesium alloys causing restricted formability at room temperature, an asymmetry of the mechanical properties and an anisotropic plastic deformation behavior. For the economic use of magnesium alloys it is necessary to optimize the properties of the extrusion products already during the forming process. Moreover, the knowledge of the deformation mechanisms and the fatigue behavior is crucial for the technical use of magnesium extrusion products. The influence of the extrusion parameters and the cooling conditions on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the two commercial magnesium wrought alloys AZ31 and ME21 is investigated in detail. The grain size of the AZ31 extrusion products and therefore the yield strength (Hall–Petch-relationship) can be varied as a function of the extrusion parameters. However, the crystallographic texture and the ductility are influenced only to a small extent. The grain sizes of the ME21 extrusion products are almost independent of the extrusion parameters, but the texture can be systematically varied, whereby the so-called RE-texture is formed. Therefore, basal slip systems can realize a larger amount of plastic strain and hence, higher fracture strains are achieved in comparison to the AZ31 extrusion products. The strength of the RE-texture can be enhanced via heat treatments of the extrusion products and thereby, the ductility is further increased. The fatigue behavior of the extrusion products of both magnesium alloys was examined in uniaxial fatigue tests and the influence of the microstructure on the extrusion products is examined. The life¬time of the AZ31 extrusions can be expressed by a Basquin and a bilinear Manson-Coffin approach, whereby a strain amplitude εA = 0.6 % indicates the transition between the LCF and the HCF regime. The fatigue life of the ME21 extrusion products is lower compared to the AZ31 extrusion products. The deformation mechanisms under compression, tension and cyclic loading were characterized ex-situ by light and electron microscopy. Furthermore, in-situ investigations were performed by energy-dispersive diffraction. Under tension the deformation is mainly realized by the activation of different slip systems. The main deformation mechanism under compression for the AZ31 extrusion products is the activation of extension twinning. For the ME21 extrusion products the compressive strain is realized by the activation of basal slip systems and extension twinning. The deformation under cyclic loading conditions is characterized by the activation of extension twins under compression and detwinning under subsequent tensile deformation. The twinning activity of the AZ31 samples increases for εA > 0.6 % and decreases for εA < 0.6 % as a function of the loading cycles.
