The definition of the maximum ampacity of a buried power line is limited by the temperature of the conductors. The knowledge of it is of significant interest for the dimensioning and determines a higher load or extension of a line. In addition to the thermal properties of a cable and their arrangement, the thermal soll conditions and the soil temperatures determines the temperature of the cable. While prop-erties and arrangement of cables are constant the soil conditions and on-site influences have a wide spatial as well as temporal variability. The procedures and technical standards which are applied in the energy engineering to calculate the ampacity of cables hardly factor in the variability of soil proper-ties, site conditions and climate. Therefore the ampacity of a power line may be under or over esti-mated. The work focused of the optimisation on the system cable, soil, site and climate. For that purpose an existing 1 10kV power line in Berlin was moitglored. Therefore the temperature of the cable as well as the heat and the water balance were measured in the cable trench for a period of 18 month. Two different sites at this line, a street and a forest location, were investigated. Another focus point was the determination of thermal and hydraulic properties of different backfill substrates in power cable trenches. The water retention, water conductivity and thermal conductivity of soils from different texture classes were measured and parameterised. To examine the impact of climate, location and soil properties as well as the influence of different levels of loads on the temperature of the cable, a physical numeric modelling was carried out. The monitoring of sites had shown that the heat balance of the locations and the resulting soil tempera-ture mainly determine the cable temperature. Because of higher soil temperatures at the street location we measured up to 5 — 10 K higher cable temperature then at the forest site. The heating of the cable in the summer caused by the heat loss of the conductor was maximum 5 K higher. Only a minor warming of 2 — 3 K was measured during winter time. A development of a drying zone in the sur-rounding soil caused by the heat loss of the cable was not observed. However, at the forest site in summer we detected a drying zone due to water uptake by roots. This completely disappeared in win-ter because of high infiltration. The laboratory study of the thermal properties of backfill substrates had shown that soil texture and water content are the main factors of thermal conductivity. Substrates with a higher content of sand (>40%) shown a high heat conductivity (>2 W/mK) under wet conditions. Below critical water content (< 5 Vol%) the thermal conductivity decreased rapidly to less then 0.7 W/mK. In substrates with a minor content of sand lower heat conductivity (< 1.3 W/mK) was measured at a wet condition. The specific thermal resistance as a function of the water content was described for three texture classes (coarse sand, loamy sand and loam). A new assessment method evaluates the thermal resistance and the thermal stability of the filling substrates in the cable periphery. An evaluation with this method shows that loamy sands allow significantly better thermal conditions for a power cable than a filling substrate of pure coarse sands. Different scenarios of loads, conditions and arrangements of buried cables were investigated with the numerical model Delphin4. The model was calibrated and validated by the data of the monitoring. The modelled and measured cable temperatures were very similar. For the study options were defined for location, cable depth, climate and current load. In the scenarios the calculated temperatures of the conductor showed significant differences between the different locations. This is caused by the different heat balances of the locations as well as by dif-ferences in the water content. The study also shows that deeper laying cables had significantly higher conductor temperatures. The temperatures of all locations show a clear seasonal cycle. During the winter period the values are lower than those in the summer by 15 — 25 K. The calculated soil mois-ture in the cable trench is influenced by the water balance of the location. An increasing dryness of the soil leads to increasing cable temperatures. At a high ampacity the drying up of the cable backfill sub-strate increases. Without infiltration events this results in a formation of a large drying zone around the cable. The presented results of this research had shown that the transmission capacity of buried power lines can be optimized by an assessment of site and soil conditions. The using of a numerical model is a powerful tool for predicting the optimum loads for cable grids. It is also very useful for studies and analysis of critical cable laying and transfer situations.en
