The influence of cationic surfactants of the n-alkyl trimethylammonium bromide (CnTAB) type on the aggregation behaviour of nonionic tri-block-copolymers of the poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) type was examined particularly by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and freeze fracture electron microscopy. The microstructure of the different phases as well as the elastic properties of the mixed systems were analyzed. It is demonstrated that the properties of the block-copolymer film are influenced, in a pronounced way, by the addition of surfactants. Several phases with different microstructures could be observed. In the case of the aqueous hexagonal phase of P65 (EO19-PO29-EO19), the addition of C12TAB induces a transition to an isotropic bicontinuous phase which is attributed to the increasing effective internal curvature. Furthermore, the oil-rich region of P105 (EO37-PO58-EO37) and P85 (EO26-PO40-EO26) systems respectively with o-xylene, water, and C8TAB at an oil-to-water mass-ratio of 13 : 1 was studied extensively. As expected the absolute curvature decreases upon addition of surfactant. A rich phase behaviour could be observed in dependence on the surfactant concentration. Investigations concerning the phase behaviour of inverse concentrated block-copolymer - surfactant-systems could not be found in the literature yet. Beside the inverse micellar phase, two more microstructures exist in the system with P105, which have not been described in any other system yet. The investigations focused on the lamellar phase, which is stable at sufficient surfactant concentration. Thus a detailed picture of the structure on a molecular scale could be drawn in dependence of the composition. The repeating distance d lies between 11 - 14 nm, the thickness of the bilayers between 4 - 5 nm including a thin inner aqueous layer of about 1 nm. The effective head group area of one polymer molecule was determined to be 1 - 3 nm2. Furthermore, the combination of static (SAXS) and dynamic measurements (neutron-spin echo spectroscopy, NSE) allowed the determination of elastic properties of the polymer-concentrated membranes for the first time. It could be demonstrated that the elastic properties of the lamellar phase depend mainly on the surfactant concentration. With increasing surfactant concentration the bending elasticity modulus ? decreases distinctly from approximately 8 kBT up to 3 kBT, whereas simultaneously the compression modulus ?B increases in an even more pronounced way.en
