Hydrogen supply from North Africa to the EU
potentials, costs, and GHG emissions

The research objective of this thesis is to investigate the potential role of hydrogen production in North Africa for an energy supply of the EU under a climate change mitigation perspective. It is divided into three research questions. These questions are related to the energy resources in North Africa, hydrogen production technologies and a potential transport of hydrogen to the EU. Assessment criteria are potentials, GHG emissions, and costs. The results are critically discussed including the discussion of the uncertainty related to the used data and assumptions and their potential impact on the results.
Das Forschungsziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die potentielle Rolle der Wasserstoffproduktion in Nordafrika für eine Energieversorgung der EU unter dem Aspekt des Klimaschutzes zu untersuchen. Sie ist in drei Forschungsfragen unterteilt. Diese Fragen beziehen sich auf die Energieressourcen in Nordafrika, Wasserstofferzeugungstechnologien und einen möglichen Transport von Wasserstoff in die EU. Bewertungskriterien sind Potentiale, THG-Emissionen und Kosten. Die Ergebnisse werden kritisch diskutiert, einschließlich der Erörterung der Unsicherheit in Bezug auf die verwendeten Daten und Annahmen und ihrer möglichen Auswirkungen auf die Ergebnisse.
