The thesis is concerned with developing new methods for three-dimensional reconstruction of the coronaries from biplane angiograms. Position and orientation of the coronaries need to be estimated automatically from two distinct X-ray projections without special calibration of the X-ray gantry. Based on a state space model of the position and orientation of small vessel segments, the coronaries are identified as the paths of extremal length through the search space. Graph theory provides the necessary concepts such as length and metric, and it describes the properties and realizations of specific search strategies. For biplane coronary angiography, the thesis designs a dedicated metric which can be used to evaluate the composition of two distinct views of the same vessel tree for 3D-reconstruction. In this composition, projective geometry allows for using the backprojection of small regions, rather than of single points, which leads to the development of a new, more robust reconstruction method. For coronary segmentation, statistical methods are used. The apparent movement of the coronaries in the X-rays is used for automatic classification of the image contents. Features are defined in a scale space of different image resolutions and they describe not just isolated pixels but also their surrounding regions. In computer simulations, the dependencies of the reconstruction errors on the calibration errors are determined, and the results are evaluated. Additionally, three-dimensional computer models of actual biplane X-ray angiograms are reconstructed and visualized.en
