Ziel des Projektes war es, Unterschiede, Ähnlichkeiten und Verschiebungen von Publikumsemotionen bei religiösen und sportlichen Großveranstaltungen zu untersuchen. Als Ausgangspunkt diente uns die Annahme, dass emotionalen Ausdrucksformen spezifische Emotionsrepertoires zugrunde liegen, die durch ein Wissen über und durch Emotionen angeleitet und verändert werden. Das methodologische Instrumentarium bildete in erster Linie die Videographie, wobei aber auch Diskurs- und Dokumentenanalysen sowie Interviews und triangulierende Kontrastierung durch anderes Datenmaterial genutzt wurden. Im Zentrum des Teilprojekts im Rahmen des DFG-Sonderforschungsbereichs 1171: Affective Societies stand mit der videographischen Erforschung somit eine Kombination aus videointeraktionsanalytischer sowie ethnographischer Erforschung von Publikumsemotionen als beobachtbare performative Ausdrucksformen, die Analyse ihrer Rahmungen und des sie leitenden Wissens. Durch die Gegenstandsfokussierung auf das Publikum als gemeinsame Größe wurde ein empirischer Vergleich zwischen zwei Feldern vorgenommen, nämlich (christliche) Religion und Sport (Profifußball). Für die Frage nach den Kollektiven ist besonders betonenswert, dass die Forschung auf Großveranstaltungen fokussierte, bei denen mindestens mehrere tausend, häufig mehrere zehntausend, zuweilen sogar mehr als eine Million Menschen das Publikum bildeten. Neben der Frage nach der Affektivität des Publikums und nach den Formen ihrer Emotionen lag das Hauptaugenmerk auf der Beantwortung der Frage nach Grenzen, Ähnlichkeiten und Verschiebungen innerhalb und zwischen den Emotionsrepertoires der beiden kulturellen Bereiche. Dabei verfolgten wir u.a. die Hypothese einer ‚populären‘ Überschneidung zwischen den Emotionsrepertoires in den beiden kulturellen Sphären, die freilich durch die soziale und kulturelle Heterogenität überlagert wird. Die Studie "Celebrations" umfasst drei Teilstudien (siehe ReadMe-Datei).

The aim of the project was to investigate differences, similarities and shifts in audience emotions at major religious and sporting events. As a starting point we assumed that emotional expressions are based on specific emotional repertoires that are guided and changed by knowledge about and through emotions. The methodological toolkit was primarily videography, but we also used discourse and document analysis as well as interviews and triangulating contrasts through other data material. The subproject within the framework of the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1171: Affective Societies thus focused on videographic research as a combination of video-interaction analytical and ethnographic research of audience emotions as observable performative forms of expression, the analysis of their framing and the knowledge that guides them. By focusing on the audience as a common factor, an empirical comparison was made between two fields, namely (Christian) religion and sport (professional soccer). For the question of collectives, it is particularly noteworthy that the research focused on major events in which at least several thousand, often several tens of thousands, sometimes even more than a million people formed the audience. In addition to the question of the audience's affectivity and the forms of their emotions, the main focus was on answering the question of boundaries, similarities and shifts within and between the emotional repertoires of the two cultural fields. In doing so, we pursued, among other things, the hypothesis of a 'popular' overlap between the emotional repertoires in the two cultural spheres, which is of course overlaid by social and cultural heterogeneity. The study "Celebrations" contains three partial studies (see ReadMe file).
