Untersuchungen zur stochastischen Online Optimierung kontinuierlicher Destillationsprozesse unter Unsicherheiten

Wendt, Moritz

Among the entire energy consumption for chemical plants, up to 40 % are consumed by distillation processes. Thus, the development of efficient methods for optimal energy saving is a significant task for continuous as well as batch distillation processes. However, the reseach in this work is only focused on continuous distillation processes. The mass and heat integration between a high pressure column (HP) and a low pressure column is well-known as an energy saving measure for design optimization. However, the optimal operation strategy is a challenging task as well. Mainly this task is the main focus of this research work. For an optimal operation policy of continuous distillation processes, the trajectories of the free control parameters need to be decided in advance. For this purpose, full knowledge of the process model, the current state and the trajectories of the permanently changing boundary conditions, such as feed conditions, is required. However, in reality the required knowledge is mostly incomplete or even not existent. Thus, the research of this work mainly focuses on methodologies for energetically optimal operation policies with the consideration of uncertainties, specifically at the feed conditions and the model parameters. All this research is based on the distillation process for the separation of the binary mixture methanol/water in the two pressure column system of the pilot plant stations of the institut for process and plant technology. First of all, experimental research is carried out for model validation for the stationary and the dynamic operation at this pilot plant. The gained cognitions are used for simulation studies for estimating the potential for optimization. For the optimal operation policy, the existence of an upstream feed vessel as a middle buffer is assumed, which gives one more degree of freedom. Based on this assumption, deterministic offline optimization is carried out, where all process variables are supposed to be known. For the research of the impact of uncertainties, the basic question is, whether the effect of the uncertainties during the running process is temporized first before deciding for the optimal trajectories of the controls (“Wait and See”), or the uncertainties are taken into consideration in advance (“Here and now”). The former strategy leads to online optimization with frequently repeated reoptimization in a moving horizon. For the latter strategy, the resulting uncertainties of the constrained output variables need to be defined. In this work, the approach of transforming inequality constraints into chance constraints is mainly researched. For the methodology of computing chance constraints, it is critical, whether the relation between the uncertain input and the constrained output is linear or not. For the applicability to continuous distillation processes, numerical methods will be modified or newly developed for both cases. A suitable combination of both strategies mentioned above is particularily robust but computationally expensive. Also for this combining strategy, numerical research is carried out for continuous distillation processes.
