This work investigates the kinetics of the electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction on dimensionally stable industrial and novel Ru-Ir-Ti oxide electrodes. To this end, a novel electrochemical two-compartment test cell was first developed, which met the highly demanding, corrosive conditions of the electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction. The influence of temperature, chloride concentration, pH value as well as the partial pressure of chlorine of the electrolyte on the chlorine evolution rate was determined experimentally and the corresponding kinetic exponents were estimated. Analysis of the tafel slope resulted in values for the exponential dependence of the reaction rate from applied electrical overpotential. Using the experimentally determined kinetic parameters an experimental reaction rate law could be established and the experimental results were compared with predictions of simple elementary reaction mechanisms. The experimental results are consistent with the so called Erenburg mechanism for the chlorine evolution, which couples the initial chloride adsorption to an oxygenated surface species forming a hypochlorite intermediate which reacts with a second chloride anion to chlorine. Furthermore, the effect of controlled electrode porosity on the electrocatalytic activity of mixed oxide electrodes made from Ru, Ir and Ti were investigated for the chlorine evolution reaction. Mesoporous and highly active electrocatalysts were prepared by an evaporation-induced self assembly by utiliziation of Pluronic®F127 templates and metal precursors (TiCl4, Ru and Ir acetate) on Titan substrates as thin film. The layer thickness of the catalytic coating was systematically varied and correlated with the activity for the evolution of chlorine. The coating approach provides higher surface areas, improved homogeneity in thickness and phase composition, and shows overall a violent enhanced catalytically activity for the chlorine evolution reaction.en
