This thesis describes synthesis, characterisation and reactivity studies of new model systems for FeFe and FeNi hydrogenases. The first section describes the synthesis of the tripodal thiolate ligands 2.4 and 2.10. The reaction of 2.4 with Fe3(CO)12 yields the iron-sulfur-clusters 2.12 and 2.13. Compound 2.12 contains a free phosphane unit, while 2.13 features a phopshane group coordinated to an Fe0(CO)4 fragment. In contrast to 2.13, the ligand system 2.10, when reacted with Fe3(CO)12, produces complex 2.14 as the only isolable product. This cluster reproduces important structural features of the FeFe hydrogenase active site. The reaction of 2.14 with cyanides causes one carbonyl ligand at the distal iron centre to be changed for CN–. The protonation of the cluster with HBF4 · Et2O affords the μ-bridged hydrido species 2.16. The electrochemical characterisation of 2.14 shows a quasi-reversible one-electron reduction process for the FeIFeI/FeIFe0 couple. In the presence of HBF4 · Et2O, the electrochemical formation of dihydrogen from protons, with 2.14 acting as a catalyst, is observed. The second part of this thesis outlines the synthesis and coordination behaviour of the new pentadentate ligands Py(SH)4 (3.4) and Py3(SH)2 (3.7). Based on compound 3.7, several heterodinuclear FeNi complexes of the type [FeNi(dppe)(Py2S2)(Ln–)](2–n)+ with L = CO (3.13), CN–/Br– (3.14), NCMe (3.15) and N3– (3.16) have been prepared as model systems for FeNi-hydrogenases. As a consequence of interactions of the iron-bonded co-ligands with the nickel site, the iron-nickel distances vary in these model systems. It is shown that the Ni(dppe) fragment responds to these interactions while the iron site is “static”, owing to pentadentate coordination by the ligand backbone. Electrochemical characterisation indicates a one-electron oxidation process at a mild potential (E1/2 = –235 mV vs. Fc/Fc+). Furthermore, compound 3.14 is oxidisble via SET using Fc+, to a mixed-valent FeIII/NiII complex on a preparative scale. Such systems are of great value for modelling the Ni-C state of FeNi hydrogenase acive sites, which contain a mixed-valent FeIINiIII core.en
