This thesis deals with the development, fabrication, and investigation of novel hybrid structures consisting of photonic crystals and either plasmonic nanoparticles or nanodiamonds. The first series of experiments focuses on coupling a diamond nanocrystal to the cavity mode of a photonic crystal slab made of gallium phosphide. For the very first time, the zero phonon line of a nitrogen-vacancy center of a diamond is directly coupled to a photonic crystal. This results in a Purcell enhancement of 12 for single photon emission. The optimization and characterization of photonic crystal cavities for the visible spectral range is then described; this optimization leads to unprecedented cavity quality factors of up to 3400. Such cavities with small mode volume and high quality factors serve as a platform for hybrid nanophotonic devices by deterministically coupling external particles (such as nanodiamonds and metal nanoparticles) to photonic crystal cavities. For this purpose, two methods are developed. One method is a nanomanipulation procedure based on atomic force microscopy. With well-directed positioning and alignment of arbitrary nanoparticles on the photonic crystal structures, positioning accuracy of 10 nm can be achieved. The second method uses overlay electron beam lithography to automatically deposit nano-sized metal or polymer particles with a positioning accuracy of 1 nm. Different kinds of hybrid systems consisting of gold nanoparticles and silicon nitride photonic crystals are produced and investigated. Such hybrid structures represent prototypes of fundamental (plasmonic) nanophotonic building blocks. They form the basis of future integrated quantum optical devices that generate photons in a controlled manner and coherently transfer them. Optimization of the fabrication process based on electron beam lithography leads to an 85% reduction in production time. Nanoimprint lithography and micro injection molding are also demonstrated as alternative fabrication techniques.en
