Film265: Report on Achieved Quality Improvements

public version

Álvarez-Mesa, Mauricio; Sanz-Rodríguez, Sergio

This document presents the results of the informal video quality subjective tests performed in the context of the Film265 project. In this project a new implementation of the HEVC/H.265 video coding standard has been developed, which obtains higher quality and higher compression efficiency than previous codecs such as the H.264/AVC, and other implementations of the HEVC/H.265 encoder (such as the open source x265 encoder). An informal subjective analysis has been carried out in order to validate the results obtained in objective comparisons. In the context of the Film265 project it was important to have a test scenario that is very similar to the final use case of the Video-on-Demand (VoD) for the film industry. As a result, a test environment was created that allowed users to test the quality of the same video encoded with different encoders using a web playback platform. Although the test environment differs from those of rigorous formal video quality subjective tests, the results obtained in this test are closer to the final application.
