Violence in schools (Bullying) has repeatedly been the focus of societal discussions. Public health research conducted in this field since the 90’s has given an insight into the frequency, the nature and some causative factors. Yet these studies have primarily focused on secondary schools. In Germany the issue of violence in primary schools has been a neglected area until now. Hence the causes for violence in this group are largely unknown, as well as the interaction between these factors and their association with other spheres of life. „WOGE“ is the first study which gives information on, experiences with violence, practicing violence and attitudes towards violence in primary school children in Hamburg. It simultaneously looks for an association between bullying and the subjective quality of life. The Individual socio economic condition, school climate and social support are taken as the main predictors for violence in this analysis. In November 2005 a cross-sectional survey was conducted in which 1154 primary school children of the third and fourth grade answered a quantitative questionnaire concerning the above issues. They needed 45 minutes to answer the questions on a three or five point answering scale. The questionnaires used were the KindlR questionnaire, the bullying questionnaire by Whitney and Smith, parts of the HBSC-Survey questionnaire and some self developed questions. In addition to bi- and multivariate analysis, Structural Equation Modelling was conducted to analyse the association between the main latent outcome variables bullying and quality of life. The results show that bullying in primary schools is a common problem. 30% of the third and fourth graders reported having been bullied at least once a week when the five single bullying questions were pooled. 5 – 7% of children admitted to have bullied someone once a week.. 25% of the school children reported feeling a low subjective quality of life. While school climate and social support by friends and peers was associated with bullying, gender and socioeconomic conditions did not show any significant association. Only 50% of pupils reported that they would inform adults about their current bullying situation. Attitudes towards violence specially „moral disengagement“ had a strong influence on engaging in bullying. Every third child reported having observed violence in the schoolyard. In conclusion, to improve the violence situation in schools, factors influencing the school climate particularly the relationship between teachers and students, needs to be enhanced because these factors in turn influence the social support between the children, thereby preventing or decreasing bullying experiences and improving the subjective quality of life in children. On the other hand it will be important to initiate discussions about the definition of violence as well as the personal attitude towards indirect violence, among the primary school children in order to improve the existing situation. For this it will be necessary to directly ask and include children in the process.en
