A potential to facilitate the search for information is identified within the scope of this work. During product development it is often not practical to obtain information by means of communication, due to the spatial distribution, or rather the multitude of people, who are involved in the process. Therefore the bulk of the information exchange occurs in the form of documents, which contain information based on established arrangements. The proportion of working time spent searching for information, depending on the industry and construction process, amounts to between 50 and 70 per cent. This knowledge provides adequate motivation to develop the existing concept. The concept is based on the hypothesis that it will be possible to search product data efficiently, if the design engineer is aware of the interrelationship between the different information received during the construction process, and if there is the potential to manage this information appropriately. The first interrelationship results from the exchange of information which takes place during the construction process, in which new information is generated and used logically, according to chronology, in relation to the existing information. The second interrelationship is derived from the product structure. The concept details a cognitive-ergonomic picture of both of these interrelationships, taking into consideration the ergonomic approach of Rasmussen. In order to evaluate the concept, a prototype user interface was developed, which aided design engineers from the industry to resolve problems regarding construction. The results which were drawn from both the analysis of the approach and from its questionnaires indicate that the hypothesis is accepted. The knowledge gained from the empirical evaluation lead to the development of the concept and the configuration of a new user interface, which was implemented in the form of a prototype. The features of this prototype, the potential to manage the data, and the facilitation of a targeted search were examined. For this an industrial investigation was carried out into the development process of a washing powder drawer of a washing machine, and the interrelated data, which was used; or rather generated, was collected. The evaluation showed that with the aid of the prototype, the industrially investigated data is able to be managed, and interrelated data can be displayed. It could be adduced from the industrial evaluations that have been carried out for this paper, that the developed concept is suitable for supporting design engineers in their search for product data.en
