In this study the modification of structure and size of micellar aggregates of the amphiphilic block copolymer polybutadiene-poly(ethyleneoxide) upon addition of surfactant was investigated. Three different polymers with narrow chain length distributions were used, namely B37-b-EO53, B40-b-EO62 and B125-b-EO155. The polymers have different chain lengths, but a similar block length ratio NB/NEO, viz. 0.65 (B40-b-EO62), 0.70 (B37-b-EO53) and 0.81 (B125-b-EO155). For the formation of mixed block copolymer-surfactant micelles a cationic, an anionic and a nonionic surfactant was chosen, namely C12N(CH3)3Na (C12TAB), C12SO4Na (SDS) and C12EO5 (C12E5). The surfactants all have the same alkyl chain length. All systems were investigated using static and dynamic light scattering as well as small angle neutron and X-ray scattering. In some cases cryo-transmission-electron-microscopy was used as a complementary method. B37-b-EO53 and B125-b-EO155 form long worm-like aggregates in aqueous solution. In the case of B40-b-EO62 worm-like micelles coexist with spherical micelles, possibly because this polymer has a somewhat smaller block length ratio NB/NEO as compared to the other two polymers. Addition of C12TAB leads to a similar behaviour in all three polymer systems. A transformation from worm-like to spherical mixed micelles was observed. In the case of B40-b-EO62 the mixed micelles formed upon addition of surfactant were smaller than the pure block copolymer micelles. The transformation was dependent on the surfactant concentration in the mixed polymer-surfactant solution. If the surfactant concentration never exceeded the CMC of the surfactant during the sample preparation, more surfactant was needed to achieve the point of transformation. At sufficiently high surfactant concentrations pure surfactant micelles were found to coexist with the mixed mielles. This finding shows that a saturation of the surfactant contents in the mixed aggregates takes place above a certain surfactant concentration in the solution. Further addition of surfactant leads to the formation of pure surfactant micelles. Addition of SDS to solutions of B40-b-EO62 leads to a similar result as for C12TAB, i.e., a transformation from worm-like to spherical micelles is observed. Addition of SDS to the longer polymer B125-b-EO155, however, does not induce a structural transition to spherical micelles. Instead, the length and flexibility of the chain aggregates change as a function of the amount of surfactant. In the case of B40-b-EO62 the nonionic surfactant C12E5 leads to a transformation into almost spherical micelles. It was found that the mixed micelles in all systems have aggregation numbers in the range of a hundred to several hundred with regard to the polymer. Even at surfactant concentrations above the so called saturation concentration, only polymer aggregates of large aggregation numbers were found. In none of the systems studied in this work the large mixed aggregates dissolved into surfactant stabilized single polymer molecules upon addition of surfactant, as reported for other polymers in the literature.en
