This work discusses three main topics: sustainability (focus: sustainability innovations), open innovation (focus: user integration, especially lead users) and organizational learning (focus: market-based organizational learning). In particular, the combination of the three topics is promising. The open innovation approach has been established in many companies as a complement to the traditional, closed innovation process. The integration of users, especially the so-called lead users, is seen as a highly valuable source for innovation and value creation. But, the underlying complex communication and information exchange process across corporate boundaries is often presented in an oversimplified way. It requires a comprehensive understanding of this open innovation process in order to develop an appropriate management approach. Another specification of the open innovation process in this work is the reference to the normative construct of sustainability. To illustrate the complex interaction and communication structure at the interface of both units, the company and the external actors, this work refers to an analogy from biology, namely the chemical synapse as a specific cell-cell communication structure. Based on this "synaptic" understanding, a framework for the management of open innovation processes is developed. This framework is derived from classical models of market-based organizational learning. The framework provides practical relevance concerning the dispositive design of innovation processes (organizational requirements), the versatile inside-in-processes (focus: organizational learning) and the various levels of value creation that address, besides market-related indicators, also other criteria of success such as the innovation capacity of companies and intra-organizational changes. Sustainability innovations are both the starting point and the scope of this work. It is crucial to identify the specific characteristics of this type of innovation. Specific feature of the sustainability innovation is its effectiveness with regard to a sustainable development. Therefore, the author proposes a typology that puts this effectiveness in the foreground and that introduces the terms "structure-stabilizing" and "transformative sustainability innovation" as two poles of systematization. These types of sustainability innovations represent distinct challenges to a company, which are reflected in terms of the constructs of organizational learning, market orientation and open innovation. In this work, key points of the open innovation process have been tested empirically in the context of a case study approach with two small and medium-sized enterprises. Key points were the lead user identification, the specific incentives for participants, the motivation- and creativity-promoting design of sustainability innovation workshops and the evaluation of the user-generated final concepts according to their level of creativity and sustainability potential. Essential was the comparison of the two user groups (lead users vs. non-lead users). Between the identified user groups, significant differences in incentives that led to workshop participation could be observed. This suggests the possibility of a specific address concerning the distinct groups. There were also differences in terms of creativity and sustainability potential in the evaluation of the final concepts. The final concepts of the lead users scored all in all distinctly higher on creativity. But, non-lead users had valuable ideas in regard of the sustainability potential and achieved relatively high ratings in this field. The qualitative analysis of four concepts showed that the final concepts of the lead users could be assigned more to the pole “structure-stabilizing sustainability innovations”; non-lead users, on the other hand, could rather be assigned to “transformative sustainability innovations”. This work contributes to a practice oriented research in the field of sustainable development. Through a comprehensive understanding of the key points of the open innovation process, especially in the area of sustainable development, the management of such processes can be improved and thus the development of urgently needed, effective sustainability innovations can be promoted. The results relating to the identification of distinct user groups and their specific acquisition and the design of user integration methods as well as the reflection of the value creation potentials of the user generated final concepts are promising.en
