Several different wall tomb constructions, of a special type and of unique décor, were caved in the arenarium of the Priscilla Catacomb, located in Rome. There are few parallels in other Roman catacombs and, vice-versa, some grave forms, characteristic of other cemeteries, are not present in the Priscilla Catacomb. Itemised analysis of the tomb constructions within the Priscilla Catacomb are followed therefore by comparative chapters that refer to the observed uniq2ueness in ancient urban Rome. From this perspective the current problems of research centre on: questions of how early Christian cemeteries were organised, the motives for the selection of special places for burial and the wish for or the renunciation of murals. A further step is taken by analysing anew, the iconographic material of the Priscillian wall tomb constructions. Especially significant her is the complex décor of the well-known niche in the wall in the section of the a1i passage. Hereupon, a new interpretation is given with reference to the vita-privata-canon, as well as to the astral conceptions of the next world that were common in the Roman Empire. Combining building technique research and iconographic analysis, generates finally, an image of the specific character of this singular area of the Roman catacombs that is only comprehensible in its historically evolved context, as well as of the religious self-representation of the early Christians buried here.en
