A single crystalline Cr2O3(0001)-surface was examined by vibrational spectroscopic methods. Using electron energy loss spectroscopy a new "microscopic" surface phonon could be identified which is strongly localized at the surface. The growth of palladium on the Cr2O3(0001)-surface was investigated applying infrared spectroscopy of the probe molecule CO. The growth behaviour could be influenced by the preparation conditions. At a substrate temperature of 90 K the palladium almost grows in a layer-by-layer mode and develops flat islands. At 300 K larger three-dimensional aggregates are formed. The particles prepared at 90 K are less crystalline. Annealing them up to 400 K they rearrange and become ordered. Between 600 and 700 K the palladium atoms start to diffuse into the oxide film until at 1000 K no more palladium can be found at the surface. CO2 is bound very weakly on the particles. The axis of the molecule is aligned almost parallel to the surface. A dissociation of CO2 on the palladium particles can be excluded. The interaction of methane and ethane with the palladium particles is very weak. Only at higher partial pressures of ethane hydrogen fragments can be identified on the surface after a reaction at 300 K. Probably ethylidine groups have developed which are dehydrogenated when the sample is annealed. Finally, only carbon remains on the surface. In the thermal desorption spectrum of pyrolyzed azomethane adsorbed on the clean Cr2O3(0001)-surface the production of methane can be observed at higher temperatures. Unfortunately, it was not possible to identify this species clearly by vibrational spectroscopy since during the pyrolysis of azomethane a non-negligible fraction reached the surface without being decomposed. This complicates an assignment of the absorption bands. Molecularly adsorbed azomethane decomposes on the palladium particles by first cleaving the N-N-bond. The -NCH3-groups which are formed in this process are dehydrogenated. After the desorption of H2 and HCN finally carbon remains. The reaction of methyl iodide adsorbed on the palladium particles leads to the formation of methyl groups, which partially desorb as methane, undergoing disproportionation. Apart from these species, stable at temperatures below 200 K, further methyl groups could be identified, which remain on the surface up to 550 K. Perhaps these are methoxy groups which are formed by a "spill-over" of methyl groups from the palladium particles to the oxide surface.en
