This dissertation considers linear systems P for which a quadratic cost/supply functional H is introduced. Examples of such systems are electrical systems consisting only of resistors, capacitors, and inductors and mechanical systems consisting only of masses, springs, and dampers. For the tuple (P,H) the notion of (cyclo-)dissipativity is introduced, which figuratively demands that one can never extract more energy from the system P than the amount of energy which has been supplied to it before (with energy measured by H). A method is constructed to check if (P,H) is cyclo-dissipative. It is shown that cyclo-dissipativity is equivalent to the solvability of the associated optimal control problem and the solutions of this associated optimal control problem are characterized. The so-called 'available storage' and 'required supply' are introduced and their meaning in the context is described. A version of the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma is stated. Also, a heuristic method is formulated to make systems which are almost cyclo-dissipative really cyclo-dissipative.en
