Space and Ecology. Multiscalar socio-spatial survey on the development of startups

This paper, which is the result of an encounter between two epistemic cultures, traces our discussion of the notions of ecology and space, conducted on the basis of an ethnographic survey of a biotech start-up holding company in Berlin. Following a spatio-temporal approach, we draw the scalar logics supporting the spatialization strategies in the course of the holding's economic expansion: which spatial qualities can be detected according to the phases and needs of the companies? What role do global chains of coworking spaces play with their standardized offer of workspaces? How does the spatial path of the holding company affect employees and the construction of their professional identity? We conclude the paper with a theoretical discussion on the (in)compatibilities between the concepts of space and ecology.
Der vorliegende Beitrag, ist das Ergebnis einer Begegnung zweier epistemischer Kulturen und zeichnet unsere Auseinandersetzung mit den Begriffen Ökologie und Raum nach, die wir auf der Grundlage einer ethnographischen Untersuchung einer Biotech-Start-up-Holding in Berlin geführt haben. Einem räumlich-zeitlichen Ansatz folgend, zeichnen wir die skalaren Logiken nach, die den Verräumlichungsstrategien im Zuge der wirtschaftlichen Expansion der Holding zugrunde liegen: Welche räumlichen Qualitäten lassen sich je nach Phase und Bedarf der Unternehmen ausmachen? Welche Rolle spielen die globalen Ketten von Coworking Spaces mit ihrem standardisierten Angebot an Arbeitsräumen? Wie wirkt sich der räumliche Werdegang der Holding auf die Mitarbeiter und den Aufbau ihrer beruflichen Identität aus? Wir schließen den Text mit einer theoretischen Diskussion über die (Un-)Vereinbarkeit der Konzepte von Raum und Ökologie ab.
