SFB 1265 Working Paper

The article examines current religious transformation processes in the Texas city of Waco as a spatial-communicative refiguration. The starting point is the resounding success of the home renovation television show Fixer Upper, which is set in Waco, attracted up to 75 million viewers in five seasons, and triggered a local tourism boom that contributed to an astonishing image change of the city. Based on ethnographic observations and interview data as well as a comprehensive document analysis, the text first reconstructs a religious form of communication that integrates an evangelical renewal motif into contemporary formats of mass media and tourist pop culture. This, I suggest, creates a social form of religion, which remains partly implicit, alludes to motifs of the sentimental, and reveals a growing self-confidence of evangelical Protestantism in the United States. As the analysis shows, space plays a key role as a medium of communication in these processes: first, its material facets serve as evidence of divine activity for the field actors themselves; second, built urban space becomes a site for the realization of an urbanity that is both cool and evangelical; and third, a struggle for attention and power unfolds in space that can be interpreted as the result of a tension between the spatial logics of trajectory space (Bahnenraum) and place (Ortsraum) – and thus as a refiguration of spaces.
